In this reading section, the author has just added a lot of suprises and context. Sharon Creech is handleing the supence well. She has just added more information about the money Carl Rae has recieved and at the end of the section Mary Lou has been chosen to come with Carl Rae to visit his family back in the old town, i think shes in for a lot of fun! *sarcasticness...* Anyway.
Sharon Creech has done a good job of relating the plot to charater delineation. For example, When M.L. is chosen to go the country with Carl Rae, this is a way to build C.R. up and make him more of an important character and it will build more of his life. A nother example is Alex and M.L., by having this plot, we learn more about Alex and also M.L. because we learn how she reacts to boys and stuff.
I think were excited to find out what is happing with M.L. and Alex, the trip to the country and all about the money and stuff. That is sort of a mystery i guess.....
The sub plot, I think, is how Beth Ann is treating her. And her love for boys and M.L. and her relationship. Where is it going. I think they are not so much best friends anymore. I dont think M.L. really wants to be friends with her after her and Derek-the-Divine or formally known as "the jerk". I think a different sub plot is the fact that Mr.Futrz died so now there is a nother problem.
I think the plot is pretty important because it clears up what is happening and expresses the characters in a nother way. I also think characters are pretty important. Its as if they work as a team. The characters are forming the plot and the plot is making the characters bolder. Its confusing but I think it makes sence. This book is getting very intence...!
I agree with you, Sami when you sarcastically say Mary Lou will have fun. There is some underlying mischievousness about Carl Ray and the money. Why hasn't he old his family yet? Also I think that this underlying mystery, once it becomes known will not have a good affect on Mary Lou.
Mr Furtz is definitely a sub-plot. However I don't think it will be a very long lasting one. It has brought up a lot of contemplation of death for Mary-Lou. And also around the time of Mr Furtz's death Carl Ray got the Money. I think that there must be some kind of connection between the two. In fact I think it was Mr. Furtz who gave the money but I have no idea why.
i deffenitlly agree with you sami. the sub plot is relationships because ML talks about her relationship a awful lot but the main thing about the book is about the relationship with CR and the rest of the family. Great review sami
The Major themes in this section are Mary Lou and Alex, Beth Anne and Carl Ray and Mary Lou and Carl Ray going to the country. The theme with Mary Lou and Alex has been revealed very slowly from the beginning. I think the reason this particular plot was revealed slowly is because Alex is the one who liked Mary Lou so the "author" themselves didn't even know about that theme. Beth Anne and Carl ray's theme didn't develop. It just appeared, out of nowhere. Suddenly Beth Anne mentions she thinks Carl Ray is "cute". It's along the same line for the trip to visit Carl Ray's Family theme.
The theme is pretty traditional. Nothing out of the ordinary happens, no aliens invade the earth. It is entertaining and in a kind of weird way it's didactic but instead of teaching a moral lesson it teaches an information lesson. For instance, Mary Lou started is teaching lessons on how to deal with boy's by living the experiences and writing them and there outcome so you can learn from it. However I don't know how authentic this information is.
Overall in this reading section no real NEW themes have been introduced. Certain themes have just developed and/or been discussed. I think it was a pretty boring reading section. Nothing too extraordinary happened.
A major theme i think of these pages were that Mary lou and carl ray went to vist his family and that they werent the most welcoming to her. Also that Mary lou missed her new boyfriend Alex so she wanted to be with him more.
The theme about carl ray and mary lou going to vist his parents, was just more a suprisse but them not welcoming her, you could tell right away. Since she talked about how they lived a different style then she lived, more less developed area. Then when they talked about , "the city", and you could tell she was uncomfetable. The other theme about Mary lou missing alex was more ovious because she talked about how she couldt wait to see him.
The theme is still more traditional but its getting more less tradtional into the book. For example when she goes to vist carl rays family, its more unexpected then when she goes to alex's house and he puts his arm around her.
I think the theme is still entertaining because there are still parts where i laugh out loud and want to be where she is because its sounds interesting. I think there is repetation though when ever she goes to vist Beth ann they always have a fight or when ever she vists alex she always want to go on futher then they do and ends up writing about it.
I disagree with Talia because she thought that this reading section was boring. I don't think ti was boring. I thing it was the most different reading section because the setting isn't in easton where Mary Lou lives, it is out in west virginia.
I do agree that it is a pretty normal plot and nothing out of the ordinary happens. This could very well be real life. K agree that the reading section is didactic in a way because of what Mary Lou is trying to teach us.
Overall this was an interesting reading section. I am interested to see how the last reading section turns out.
The setting in this reading section is different from the other reading sections. Before the story took place in easton where Mary Lou lives. In this reading section the story takes place in west virginia where Carl Ray lives.
The setting in this reading section is it is summer time and it is calm and there is not a lot going on. I think the setting plays a role in what is happening in the story because Mary Lou and her cousins went swimming and they hiked up the hill. You wouldn't do that in the middle of the winter.
The sense of atmosphere at Carl Rays house in Mary Lou perspective is scary at night, calm in the day. The author shows the atmosphere is scary at night by when the scary stories are told. Which makes Mary Lou lose sleep because of bad dreams. The author shows the atmosphere is calm in the day because there isn't a lot to do in West Virginia. We know Mary Lou doesn't like being in west Virginia though because she keeps saying how she wants to go home.
I am interested to see the setting and it's effects on the characters and the plot in the next reading section.
