The major themes in this reading section are Alex (as always),Beth Anne, Carl Ray and Beth Anne and Carl Ray. In every entry Mary Lou writes a lengthly and gushy portion about Alex. It usually consists of Mary Lou describing their date or "get together" and then once she is at the climax, she usually thinks he is going to kiss her but that hasn't happened yet. The section usually ends with a SIGH. Beth Anne got invited to the GGP pajama party which is essentially a sleepover for the popular girls. Mary Lou wasn't invited so thus it creates a conflict. Though later in this reading section we find out that Mary Lou won't be in town because she is going with Carl Ray back to his house for a few days. Oddly enough, Beth Anne and Carl Ray are almost dating even though Carl Ray is 4 years older. Carl Ray bought a car with the money.
Alex's part in the story is developed quite slowly. Him and /mary Lou both take little steps towards a more serious relationship. The thing with Beth Anne becoming part of the popular girls and becoming more and more snobby has been slowly revealed since the first couple of chapters. Sometimes it looks as though she is getting better but it is usually not so. Carl Ray getting the Money, getting the car all happened really fast.
Beth Anne and Carl Ray being together happened most abruptly. After Beth Anne broke up with Derek the DIVIIINE she almost immediately started to see Carl Ray as cute. This is peculiar because Mary Lou describes him as lanky and un-attractive. There is nothing leading up to it, it just happens. There is nothing wierd that happens before hand and then when you read it you say "oh that explains it" .
The theme is pretty traditional. There is nothing too absurd. The theme isn't really didactic, it's mostly just for the readers entertainment.
I agree with you talia the theme we see is more traditional and kind of random at some points but it is more for entertainment. Also when you talked about Beth ann discription and mary lou's discription of Carl ray its the oppisate. Great review of the chapters Talia.
I think now that the book is summer and how the summer is close to a end, the book is getting a little rushed. Since the setting is still summer most of the people are comfertable with ewaht they are doing execpt for Mary Lou. The atmospherere is getting happyer for mary lou. For beth Ann its getting more different and this summer she cares the most about boy friends and is losing her friends. The Auther is writing about how carl ray is getting more emotional and and is showing alot more emotion from some characters. She also shows alot depth in the characters like before carl ray was just a character in a book but now he is a person. She is using this all through summer and the pool. The auther wouldn't have the same affect on the characters if it was winter for example because they act different.
I agree with you when you say that Mary Lou's mood is getting better. However both Mary Lou and Beth anne are getting more interested in boy friends. When you wrote that the atmosphere is getting "different " for Beth Anne, you implied it was getting worse because of this interest. Yet the two girls share the same interest it has just turned out differently for them. GOOD REVIEW ALEXIS!!!
I agree with both of you. The 2 girls are getting more interested in boys and Beth. And i liked how you said that the plot is traditional yet random. And when will Alex kiss her already?? "I hope it doesn't taste like chicken!"
I think the author made the characters very open. In the book at the moment the only things we are sort of confused about are: do Beth Ann and Carl Ray really like eachother? And how far is Alex and Mary Lou's relationship going? Thats what makes us want to read more. I think the author had a sad feeling when she was writing a book because made the setting very down when it was thunderstorming and dark out. But i think the author recovered quickly because something has happened: Mary Lou was chosen to go to the farm with Carl Ray. I dont know about any of you but I feel something exciting coming on.
Right now, I think most of the characters are three dimentional because we are well in the book and I havent spotted any thing that i dont know about someone. Maybe i've been wondering if Mary Lou and Beth Ann's friendship is true or not... but that doesnt really have anything to do with this. Carl Ray is begining to open up and get used to the family. He sure seems escited about his car and wants to drive everyone everywhere.
I really am excited to find out what is happening with Alex and how he is going to handle Mary Lou leaving. I dont think he will necisarily forget her but I think he will miss her a lot. Maybe so much he will have a new girlfriend to keep his mind of her?? Maybe he is that kind of guy that he doesnt want to be alone. Or maybe he is a player like Derek (formally known as "that jerk" or "Derek the di-vinnee"). The author is doing a good job in making this book intesting.
Now on too the Odysee thing: I think Mary Lou is enjoying the book and I think that it has a connection to her diary/journal. Everytime something happens with Alex, she feels like she is on Mount Olypmus. The author is handeling this quite well and it is for sure going somewhere. She is finding a cleaver way to connect Mary Lou's character to the characters in the Odysee. I like the authors style. (If you were wondering which questions I am answering: its kinda a mix between Style and Character :P)
i agree with sami about how we don't know if Carl Ray and Beth Ann really like each other. Beth Ann said she only wants to go out with him because she wants to make Derek jealous, but now she is acting like she really likes him now. I am very interested to see what happens with Beth Ann and Carl Ray.
sami said that all the main characters are three dimensional now before only some of them were. i agree with sami because the author is telling us much more about them and they are in the story much more now.
Sami said how she think Alex might find another girlfriend for the week because he doesn't want to be alone. also she said that she thinks he is a player. I don' agree with her because alex doesn't seem like a player to me because when Christy is trying to get Alex to like her he is still staying with Mary Lou.
I think the major themes in this reading section are Mary Lou and Alex, Beth Ann and derek and Beth Ann and Carl Ray.
Lets start with mary Lou and Alex. This theme was developed when Mary Lou and Alex started to spend more time with each other. when alex told Mary Lou that he really didn't have any friends on her street and he just made it up to see her that showed her that he really does like her. i think that made there relationship closer. Also when Mary Lou and Alex hold hands they become closer. i think this is a traditional theme because it is about teen love.
Beth Ann and Derek have been talked about a lot in the story. When they break up the theme is revealed when Beth Ann come to Mary Lou on the street almost crying when Mary Lou is with Alex. We know Beth Ann was upset because she constantly was phoning Mary Lou with idea's of what she will do and why she thinks Derek cheated on her. i think the theme is traditional because it is teen love also.
Beth Ann then decides she wants to make derek jealous by going out with Carl Ray. The theme is reveled when Beth Ann asked Mary Lou if she thinks Carl Ray like her. The them is developed when they go on dates. At first we are told Beth Ann just wants to make derek jealous but i think Beth Ann is starting to like Carl Ray now. This them is traditional because it is teen love as well.
I have noticed that pretty much this whole section is about love and crushes and stuff like that. i am interested to see how all of these relationships turn out. I am also interested to see how Mary Lou going back to Carl Ray's house to visit her cousins turn out.
